Hong Kong: Macau Restaurant

The nice thing about tea restaurants – or cha chaan ten – in Hong Kong is that they are basically open all day. They can serve you your breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and something to satisfy your midnight munchies. Even though this location of Macau Restaurant is in a touristy area, it nevertheless serves a more-or-less authentic, everyman (and everywoman) Hong-Kong-style breakfast.  I could’ve gone to a whole host of other cha chaan tengs, but I chose this one because it at least differentiated itself by serving well-known Macanese food items along with typical HK-tea-restaurant fare. I’ve been … Continue reading Hong Kong: Macau Restaurant

Don’t Go For The Signatures: Deer Garden Signatures

My last three visits to Richmond have all occurred on Saturday nights, and I ended up having dinner at restaurants in Continental Plaza on two of those three occasions. I noticed on both my visits to Continental Plaza that there was always a huge lineup at Deer Garden Signatures. The sign outside said that the restaurant specializes in rice noodles in fish soup, which I can honestly say is not something that I am even remotely familiar with. To me, the name of the dish made it sound like it came from a coastal province in China whose cuisine is … Continue reading Don’t Go For The Signatures: Deer Garden Signatures

Pearl Castle Back to Back Part II: Pearl Castle Sexsmith/Alexandra

My family’s previous experience was at Pearl Castle Richmond Centre was positive enough for us to choose to visit its only other current location (on Sexsmith/Alexandra) after foolishly and unsuccessfully trying to secure a walk-in table at Sushi Hachi on a Saturday night. We arrived at Pearl Castle a few minutes after 6:00 P.M., and we were able to secure the last open table at the restaurant. After sitting down, we didn’t need much time to ponder over what we wanted to order. We wanted dishes similar to the enjoyable ones we had at their other location. I wanted the … Continue reading Pearl Castle Back to Back Part II: Pearl Castle Sexsmith/Alexandra

Pearl Castle Back To Back Part I: Pearl Castle Richmond Centre

When did I visit this place? Two, three months ago? I honesty do not remember. What I can recall is how much my wife, daughter, son, and I enjoyed our meal there. Like so many of the local Taiwanese restaurants, Pearl Castle serves some of the best Taiwanese food ( casual-bubble-tea-style, in this case) I’ve had in North America. What does one order at a casual-bubble-tea-style restaurant? Bubble tea, of course. I had the plain milk tea (shown in the glass), my wife had the milk tea with pearls (shown in the second photograph), and my daughter had the milk … Continue reading Pearl Castle Back To Back Part I: Pearl Castle Richmond Centre

It Served Me Tasty Food…Like A Boss

The Boss Restaurant- My wife and I were not in the mood to drive around looking for places to eat after taking the kids to the movies at metrotown, so we decided to have dinner right at the mall. For a mall as big as metrotown (…I know, it’s called Metropolis at Metrotown),  there are surprisingly few restaurants. The only choices are the two AYCE Japanese places, the ramen extension of one of the AYCE Japanese place, Fortune House, McDees, the food court, stone grill, and The Boss. We didn’t feel like stuffing ourselves silly with supbar Japanese food, so … Continue reading It Served Me Tasty Food…Like A Boss

Bye Bye Burnaby Restaurants!! (only for the summer)

The One – Today was my daughter’s last Mandarin school session for the school year, and it marked the temporary end of my family’s weekly visits to Burnaby for lunch on Saturdays (Mandarin school resumes in September).  I have to say that this little break came just in time. I’ve almost run out of new places to visit around her Mandarin school and I could use the time during the break to do a little research in compiling another list of restaurants to try in the area. But before the break, we still had one Saturday family meal left in … Continue reading Bye Bye Burnaby Restaurants!! (only for the summer)

Beef Noodle Surprise

Pearl House – Saturday means Mandarin school for my daughter and Mandarin school means lunch in Burnaby. We were hungry and pressed for time today so we wanted to go somewhere quick and reliable for lunch. Off the top of my head, I could only think of one restaurant that was quick and reliable in the vicinity of my daughter’s Mandarin school and that restaurant was Pearl House. Pearl House was one of the first Taiwanese restaurants that we visited when we moved here. Although the food it served wasn’t the best Taiwanese we’ve had, the food that we received … Continue reading Beef Noodle Surprise
