Don’t Go For The Signatures: Deer Garden Signatures

My last three visits to Richmond have all occurred on Saturday nights, and I ended up having dinner at restaurants in Continental Plaza on two of those three occasions. I noticed on both my visits to Continental Plaza that there was always a huge lineup at Deer Garden Signatures. The sign outside said that the restaurant specializes in rice noodles in fish soup, which I can honestly say is not something that I am even remotely familiar with. To me, the name of the dish made it sound like it came from a coastal province in China whose cuisine is … Continue reading Don’t Go For The Signatures: Deer Garden Signatures

Aberdeen Centre Food Court: Chicken Wings at Wo Fung

I can’t resist fried chicken wings, especially when I see order after order being served to customers that looked like they couldn’t wait to dig their teeth into them . I stood practically frozen for a good ten minutes watching nothing but pipping hot deep fried chicken wings coming out of the kitchen of Wo Fung. I had just finished having a filling meal with two large cups of iced milk tea and some bubble waffle, but the wings just looked too enticing for me to pass up. Since neither my wife, daughter, nor son had any appetite left for … Continue reading Aberdeen Centre Food Court: Chicken Wings at Wo Fung

With such extraordinary views at such ordinary prices, the quality of the food really didn’t matter

Altitudes Bistro – Traditionally, the first day of school for public school systems across North America is scheduled for one of the two days after the labor day long weekend. For the two school years that my daughter has been enrolled in local public elementary schools, the first day of school have both been scheduled for the day immediately following labor day. I used to love the excitement of the first day of school. You get to see a lot of friends you haven’t seen for the whole summer and listen to their stories of the grandiose adventures they went … Continue reading With such extraordinary views at such ordinary prices, the quality of the food really didn’t matter

North American Food with North American Portions

After spending around eight weeks constantly going hungry between meals as a result of the tiny local portion sizes in Taiwan (and Japan), I was really looking forward to the larger, more satisfying portion sizes of North America. ┬áStrangely, after such a short time away, I was also really missing North American food. Since Earls is the go-to restaurant serving North American style food for my wife, kids, and I, we decided to make it the first non-breakfast restaurant (the time difference basically made breakfast places and 24-hour joints our only options for meals in the middle of the night) … Continue reading North American Food with North American Portions

…At Least I Got A Good Deal…(and chronicled another burger experience)

Player’s Chophouse – While everyone was watching the Canada Day parade and partaking in the various Canada Day activities around Canada Place, my family and I were at the other end of downtown Vancouver having our dinner at Player’s Chophouse. Player’s Chophouse is located right in from of B.C. Place Stadium, an area so devoid of people on the evening of July 1, 2012 that it felt like a ghost town. There were no special events and celebrations going on in or around B.C. Place, so naturally there were no crowds in the area. Surprisingly, there was a huge crowd … Continue reading …At Least I Got A Good Deal…(and chronicled another burger experience)

Trying To Come Up With A Better Picture Of The Food

Applause Japanese Restaurant- After reviewing the pictures that I took of my family’s lunch at Applause Japanese Restaurant today, I have to say that they are truly awful. There were so many items on our table that I couldn’t take a picture of one item without five other items also making it into to the picture. Our table wasn’t crowded because it was too small. Quite the contrary, the four of us were given a table that could’ve easily seated six. Our table was crowded because there was a lot of food included in each of the four lunch specials … Continue reading Trying To Come Up With A Better Picture Of The Food

When MSG is good, Star Anise is On Chicken Skin, and Memories of Horse Manure Suddenly Appear

Congee Noodle House – Being a parent of two young children, I’ve learned to always make plans contingent upon the unexpected. My original plan today was to first drive a family friend to the airport in the morning, run some errands in Richmond, and then to have lunch with my wife and mother-in-law at a dim sum place we haven’t been before in Richmond. But both my son and daughter woke up with a fever today, meaning that they would both have to stay home from school. This in turn meant that we would have to get takeout for lunch … Continue reading When MSG is good, Star Anise is On Chicken Skin, and Memories of Horse Manure Suddenly Appear
