Full Circle (Chinalized Americanized Chinese food)

Chongqing on Robson – Wanna know what’s lacking in a city filled with authentic and amazing Chinese cuisine? Americanized Chinese Food. No matter where I go, I can’t seem to find a restaurant that serves high quality (North)Americanized Chinese food. It’s really frustrating sometimes. Whenever I walk into a random hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant expecting deep fried meat covered in sweet syrup or brown sauce, I am met with water braised beef or some other amazingly authentic Chinese dish. I know that Americanized Chinese food can be easily found in food courts, but what I’m looking for is table-service style food … Continue reading Full Circle (Chinalized Americanized Chinese food)

The $60 Question

Zest – Sixty dollars per head for food alone is what I expect to spend for a 3-course dinner at one of the nicer French, Italian, Nouveau American, or Nouveau Canadian restaurants in town. I figured the appetizer would cost around $15, the main around $35, and $10 for the dessert. If I switched cuisines and opt for a nice Japanese dinner at $60 a head, I would probably get a lot less value for my money in terms of the total dining experience. I could probably get a filling meal consisting of high quality sushi for $60 at Ajisai … Continue reading The $60 Question

Beef Noodle Surprise

Pearl House – Saturday means Mandarin school for my daughter and Mandarin school means lunch in Burnaby. We were hungry and pressed for time today so we wanted to go somewhere quick and reliable for lunch. Off the top of my head, I could only think of one restaurant that was quick and reliable in the vicinity of my daughter’s Mandarin school and that restaurant was Pearl House. Pearl House was one of the first Taiwanese restaurants that we visited when we moved here. Although the food it served wasn’t the best Taiwanese we’ve had, the food that we received … Continue reading Beef Noodle Surprise

Do Not Come Here For The Sushi

Shuraku Sake Bar & Bistro – I didn’t know what I was thinking. How could I have expected good nigiri sushi at Shuraku Sake Bar & Bistro? It is an izakaya; which is essentially a gastro-pub. And even the best Japanese gastro-pubs in town, such as Kingyo, are not known for producing good, traditional nigiri sushi. I guess I was so hungry today that I wasn’t thinking straight. I had an extra-early breakfast at 6:30 AM and by the time my wife and I arrived at Shuraku for lunch at 12:45 PM, I was beyond starving. For some reason, I … Continue reading Do Not Come Here For The Sushi

Should’ve Left a Good Memory Alone

Dunn’s Famous (I forgot to bring my camera. So these are iphone pics) – The smoked meat sandwich that I had at Dunn’s Famous BC a week after it opened was so good that fireworks were going off in my head several hours after I had finished eating it. I’ve never been to one of the proper smoked meat deli’s in Montreal, so I was shocked at how truly amazing the smoked meat at Dunn’s Famous was. Compared to the pastrami and corned beef that I was used to having in Toronto, Boston, and even New York, the smoked meat … Continue reading Should’ve Left a Good Memory Alone

Umami Overload

Phnom Penh – Never in a million years would I have imagined that MSG is such a popular seasoning with the locals. With all the urban legends and negative attitudes towards this product of fermentation, I would’ve thought that the health-concious, modern city-dwellers known as Vancouverites would be averse to restaurants that use it liberally. But apparently that is not the case because Phnom Penh is currently the number 1 rated restaurant on urbanspoon. It is also named as the top Vietnamese restaurant in 2012 by Vancouver Magazine. My wife and I dined at Phnom Penh for the first time … Continue reading Umami Overload

Nicli Antica Pizzeria – Eight months after moving here, My wife and I still have not found our ‘go-to’ pizza place. Our current favourite is The Bibo, but it is located too far from our house for us to ‘go-to’ it whenever we crave pizza. Ideally, the go-to pizza place would be located within a 15 -20 minute drive from our house. Nicli Antica Pizzeria looks to be a prime candidate to become our go-to pizza place. It is located in gastown, which is a 15 minute drive from my house when traffic conditions are optimal. Also, from online reviews, … Continue reading I Respectfully Disagree with the Expert Judges
